Known for its lush jungles, picturesque rice paddies and world-renowned art scene, Ubud, Bali is a popular destination for artists and art lovers alike. And while the town is home to many places to learn about and appreciate art, Tanah Gajah Ubud has a new offering that gives visitors a close-up look at the creative process.

At Tanah Gajah Ubud, an iconic resort that has long been immersed in one of Bali’s most impressive personal art collections, you can now participate in hands-on art classes with the same Indonesian artists whose work adorns the property.

Tanah Gajah and the Hadiprana family have long held a deep connection to Indonesia’s art scene. In addition to being collectors and supporters of local artists, they have also played an important role in promoting Indonesian art. This new art class initiative in Tanah Gajah is just another way for them to share their passion for art with others.

“Art has always been part of the fabric of our resort,” said Deasy Swandarini, General Manager of Tanah Gajah Ubud. “We created these new art classes so our guests could connect more deeply to the rich art scene both on-site and in Bali and create something one-of-a-kind to remember their time on the island.”

The painting classes are available upon request. Each session, approximately three hours, is IDR 1,500,000 ++ (USD 104 ++), with additional sessions offered at 50% of the initial price.

Egg painting and more

In addition to oil painting classes, the hotel works with a local egg painting artist for guests interested in this Balinese craft where intricate images are painted onto an egg shell.

When it comes to art, the little ones are not left out. Even though there are no organized art programs for children, the resort gives family access to the brand-new art area as part of their club benefits. The space—stocked with creative materials like watercolors for kids to paint freely or coloring books that introduce Balinese traditional themes—is available for reservation by families. The butler assigned to each guest will explain the importance of each image.

“We want to spark imagination and creativity in all ages through art,” shared Swandarini. “Art is a therapeutic activity that helps calm a busy mind. There are few places as serene as our property to slow down, feel inspired, and tap into your inner artist.”

For those who want to take their appreciation for art to the next level, this art class in Tanah Gajah Ubud is a perfect opportunity to do so. The intimate setting and access to some of Bali’s most renowned artists make this class an experience that you won’t find anywhere else.
