Beyond the stay: How discarded linens are changing lives in Hanoi
Hanoi attracts travelers with its vibrant culture, lively art scene, diverse food, traditional crafts, and serene lakes. Mövenpick Living West Hanoi brings sustainable hospitality into this mix, incorporating environmental and community-focused practices into the guest experience.
Located on Duy Tan St, Cau Giay Ward, the property integrates sustainability into daily operations with initiatives that protect the environment and engage the local community.
From hotel rooms to classrooms: Linens with a mission

What happens to bed linens when they’re no longer crisp and pristine?
Many hotels discard them, but Mövenpick Living West Hanoi has found a better way.
Through its partnership with Diversey’s Linen for Life program, the hotel gives its used linens a second purpose by turning them into school uniforms for children living in remote areas.
To date, the hotel has donated approximately 800 kilograms of retired linens—nearly 99% of its supply. These donations have been transformed into 1,017 uniforms for schools in Vietnam’s mountainous Điện Biên province, where the need for assistance is significant.
For families in Xuan Lao and Muong Lan villages, where income is often stretched thin, these uniforms relieve a financial burden while providing students with proper attire for learning.
But the impact doesn’t stop there.
The tailoring process involves local garment workshops, where artisans earn income by converting the linens into finished products. By linking this initiative to community livelihoods, the project supports both education and employment, creating a ripple effect of positive change.
Even fabrics too worn to transform into uniforms find a purpose. The hotel reuses these scraps as cleaning cloths, ensuring almost nothing goes to waste.

Ditching plastic: A small change with big impact
Plastic waste has become one of the most pressing environmental challenges, and Mövenpick Living West Hanoi is addressing the challenge of plastic waste with practical solutions.
To reduce dependency on single-use plastics, the hotel has introduced innovative alternatives throughout its operations.
Plastic water bottles are replaced by refillable glass bottles, while biodegradable toiletry kits and packaging made from materials like cassava and corn starch are provided in guest rooms.
Even small items like trash bags have been rethought, with eco-friendly versions that decompose faster than conventional plastics.

Dining services also play a vital role in this approach. Paper straws, PVC-safe wraps, and biodegradable capsules for in-room coffee makers showcase solutions that balance functionality with environmental care. Guests who dine at the hotel experience luxury without the lingering footprint of excessive waste.
Guests are also encouraged to take part in the hotel’s sustainability efforts. Informational cards in rooms encourage visitors to conserve water and energy by reusing towels or skipping daily sheet changes, making small, practical choices that collectively reduce resource consumption.
The next chapter: Raising the bar for impact
Mövenpick Living West Hanoi’s current initiatives reflect a commitment to sustainability, with plans to expand their impact.
Programs like “Soap for Hope,” which recycles used soap into new bars for distribution in underserved communities, and “CoffeeBriques,” which repurposes coffee grounds into eco-friendly heating solutions, are in the pipeline.
These ideas showcase the hotel’s forward-thinking approach to sustainability, ensuring its story continues to grow.
“We are committed to supporting initiatives that protect the planet and enrich lives. Sustainability will continue to be at the heart of how we grow our business and serve our guests,” said Ms. Shamila Rolfe, the hotel’s General Manager.
