Hiraya: Where hope and dreams take center stage

“Hiraya,” a Filipino word that evokes imagination, hope, and the realization of dreams, captures the spirit of an unforgettable Easter concert at The Manila Cathedral. Mark your calendars for April 25, 2025, as the Philippine Suzuki Youth Orchestra (PSYO) takes the stage to perform a program that blends faith, heritage, and youthful resilience strengthened by life’s challenges and their unwavering dedication to excellence.

Composed of students who have worked tirelessly on their craft, these young talents embody the theme of hope, proving how music can inspire and transform lives. For many of these young performers, the concert is not just a milestone but a dream realized through diligence and creativity. This year, the inclusion of a youth choir—Huni, an all-female ensemble whose members bagged a National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) award last year—and other vocalists marks a first for the orchestra, adding depth and texture to their sound. The collaboration symbolizes the unifying power of music.

Notably, PSYO has consistently pushed the boundaries of what young Filipino musicians can achieve. Earlier this year, they showcased their talent at the CCP Pasinaya, the largest multi-arts celebration in the country. They also made waves on the global stage as the first Filipino orchestra to be featured on the TEDx platform. These milestones highlight the orchestra’s commitment to sharing the beauty of music both locally and internationally.

Msgr. Rolando R. dela Cruz, rector of The Manila Cathedral,  reflects on the event. “Hiraya embodies the hope and faith that Easter brings. It’s a celebration of music as a unifying force, reminding us of the dreams we share as a community.”

Aligned with the Jubilee theme, “Pilgrims of Hope,” Hiraya highlights the optimism and aspirations for a brighter future. It also reflects the PSYO’s mission to bring orchestral music to more communities, especially to children and youth.

The concert also celebrates Filipino culture with music that honors family ties and shared heritage, reminding us of the values that shape our identity.

Herrick Ortiz, music director of the PSYO, shares his vision: “Hiraya is about more than music—it’s about connection. We want to inspire young people to dream, to embrace their roots, and to see music as a way to express and share their stories.”

Repertoire highlights

The evening’s program promises a rich and varied selection of pieces, from beloved classical staples to iconic Filipino works. Among the highlights are excerpts from Handel’s iconic opera Messiah – such as the Hallelujah Chorus and For Unto Us a Child Is Born, the gentle beauty of Bach’s Air from Orchestral Suite No. 3 (colloquially known as Air on the G String), and the soulful Ave Maria, rendered by the enchanting voice of Jaime Rose Ong.

Tchaikovsky’s chamber masterpiece, String Serenade, and Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C major, performed by Caitlin Loewe Chua, will draw listeners into the intricate world of classical music. The orchestra will also deliver stunning renditions of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, with Theodore Julius Tan as soloist for Spring and Winter.

The Concerto for 2 Cellos will showcase the technical prowess and versatility of Luis Antonio Sarmiento and Storm Bantilan. Aside from the classical repertoire, the orchestra will also be performing movie soundtracks and Filipino classics close to our hearts.

The magic begins even before the main performance, with a pre-concert at 6:15 PM featuring the Huni Choir and marquee soloists Camille Lopez-Molina, Anna Migallos-Bautista, Carlo Falcis, Myramae Meneses, Iona Ventocilla-Borja, Carlo Mañalac, and Raymond Yadao of Viva Voce. Gary Fabricante, John Fiel Aniceto, and Danny Monte will join Huni and Viva Voce for a memorable chorus finale.

Building a musical legacy

For PSYO, Hiraya represents more than just one evening of music. It’s part of a larger mission to make orchestral music accessible and meaningful. Through its grassroots outreach and focus on young talent, the orchestra is planting seeds of creativity and collaboration in communities all over the Philippines. From their participation in CCP Pasinaya to their historic TEDx debut, they are continuously proving that Filipino talent is truly world-class.

This Easter, join PSYO on April 25, 2025 at The Manila Cathedral for a night of heartfelt music, cultural reflection, and shared optimism. Experience Hiraya and witness the beauty of young Filipino artistry and the boundless possibilities it represents.
