Parakemama by Ed Lorenzo: An artful tribute to a mother’s love
Contemporary Filipino artist Ed Lorenzo has introduced Parakemama, a deeply personal collection that honors the love and sacrifices of mothers. Following the success of his earlier work, Di Magmaliw, Lorenzo returns after five years with artworks inspired by his own experiences and emotions. This series invites audiences to reflect on the bond between mothers and children, creating a connection between art and memory that feels both intimate and universal.
The collection opens with three evocative pieces that explore different facets of maternal love. Titled Sinapupunan (Womb), Hele (Lullaby), and Kanlungan (Shelter), the paintings are deeply rooted in Lorenzo’s memories of his mother. They capture the warmth, protection, and care that make a mother’s love so special.
“Parakemama is my love letter to my mother,” shares Lorenzo. “It’s a way of preserving the emotions tied to her presence in my life. Each painting holds the comfort, warmth, and love that I felt growing up under her care.”

Art in motion
Lorenzo uses a fluid art technique, layering acrylic paint with glue and resin to create pieces full of energy and emotion. The swirling colors and intricate textures echo the organic and dynamic nature of a mother’s love. Each piece feels alive, balancing strength and tenderness in a way that resonates deeply.
This technique, Lorenzo explains, captures the intangible things we feel but cannot see: the soothing rhythm of a lullaby, the protection of a mother’s embrace, and the sacredness of the womb that nurtures life.

Infused with Filipino culture
Beyond his personal inspiration, Lorenzo weaves into Parakemama the cultural values central to Filipino families. Themes like respect for elders, close-knit ties, and the importance of home are deeply embedded in the collection. These ideas resonate with many Filipino households, presented here in a contemporary art form that feels both personal and shared.
While Parakemama originates from Lorenzo’s individual story, its themes are universal. By exploring love and family through art, he touches on emotions that many can relate to, creating connections across different lives and perspectives.
