What started as a tiny seed quickly blossomed into a grander vision—a destination restaurant in Bali’s countryside designed to restore the environment and benefit the local community. And so, Begawan Biji was born.

Authentic Balinese architecture and eco-conscious commitment

One of the first things you’ll notice about Begawan Biji is its stunning architecture and dedication to sustainability. Designed by Balinese architect Conchita Blanco, the restaurant mirrors a wantilan, the traditional two-tiered open pavilion that serves as a gathering place in Balinese villages. This innovative two-tiered roof not only enhances but also catches cross breezes and provides shade, ensuring your dining experience is comfortable without relying heavily on energy.

The structure blends beautifully with its environment, crafted from natural materials sourced from across Indonesia. You’ll find 200-year-old reclaimed ironwood from Kalimantan, sandstone from Sumba Island, and eco-certified bamboo from Bali, each thoughtfully selected to reflect Indonesia’s diverse cultural and environmental heritage, blending traditional elements with sustainability.

In collaboration with environmental engineering consultancy Eco-Mantra, Begawan Biji has implemented systems to minimize its energy and carbon footprint, use water responsibly, and turn waste into compost.

From the outset, they have also embraced a strict ‘no plastic’ policy, further emphasizing their dedication to the environment.

Art and antiques – A feast for the eyes

The interiors and gardens of Begawan Biji are adorned with art and antiques handpicked by the owners from their private collection.

Artisans from across Indonesia custom-made natural fabrics, tableware, and ceramics for the restaurant, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the dining experience. This attention to detail creates an intimate and luxurious atmosphere, making every visit a visual and culinary delight.

Farm-to-table dining

Surrounded by three hectares of lush rice fields, Begawan Biji embodies a true farm-to-table experience. Local farmers cultivate Mansur Heritage Rice right outside its doors using natural, chemical-free methods as part of Begawan’s regenerative agriculture program.

The farm’s permaculture garden, along with its chicken and duck house, lotus ponds, and vibrant orange groves, provide a harvest that transforms into extraordinary dishes.

The menu reads like a love letter to freshness. Each dish is crafted from ingredients picked at their peak, celebrating the field-to-fork philosophy.
